With the advances in antiretroviral therapy, patients infected with HIV are experiencing an increased lifespan. However, data suggest that there is a trend toward increased morbidity and mortality due to non-AIDS-related causes, including cardiovascular disease (CVD). Ms. Cioe’s presentation will review the incidence and prevalence of CVD in HIV-infected patients, review selected clinical trial data, discuss potential factors related to the increased rate of cardiac events in HIV-infected patients, and suggest measures that advanced practice nurses can implement to reduce the risk of CVD in this population.
